About Ukraine Ukraine is the second largest country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by the Russian Federation to the east; Belarus to the north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west; Romania and Moldova to the southwest; and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south. Ukraine is a member of the CIS. From 1923 to 1991 most of the country was a constituent republic within the USSR. The city of Kiev is both the capital and the largest city of Ukraine

Ukraine Languages The Ukrainian language has continued to exist and be used by Ukrainians despite active discouragement. It has always maintained a sufficient base among the Ukrainian people in its folklore songs, itinerant musicians, and prominent authors. The question of whether contemporary Ukrainian and Russian (as well as Belorussian and Rusyn) are dialects of a single language or separate languages is not entirely decided by linguistic factors alone

Ukraine Currency A currency called hryvna was used in Kievan Rus'. In 1917, after the Ukrainian National Republic declared independence from the Russian Empire, the name of the new Ukrainian currency became hryvnia, a revised version of the Kievan Rus' hryvna. The designer was Heorhiy Narbut.
