Whether you want to sell a product or a concept or a service, marketing them requires unique talents and calls for specific skills. Marketing in simple words means making a customer buy your product and this is achieved through so many ways like advertising through magazines and media, making direct telephone calls to the customers, meeting the customers directly at their doorsteps, announcing deals and discounts, mailing or emailing customers, trying to make the product more attractive, free value adds to the product etc. However marketing is not just finding customers. It involves customer satisfaction and making the customers stay with the company's product or service. Efficient marketing involves a thorough and realistic study of the market.
Working independently as marketing personnel, meeting up will all the extra pressure of freelance marketing calls for extraordinary capacity and a very bold personality. A degree in business alone would do no good. A freelance marketing job can be highly rewarding if only the freelancer prepares himself well and hits the target at the right time. It requires a complete and thorough study of the company's business and its competitors. This level of preparation is required right at the time of approaching the company for the job. A well built portfolio of the freelancer along with a catchy business card and a good understanding of the company and its business would create an excellent first impression.
Most of the small businesses do not employ full time marketing persons and some do not employ any. They find it more cost effective to hire a freelancer for their marketing job. Even those companies big or small who employ marketing persons on a full time employee basis sometimes seek freelancers for some of the areas of marketing where they do not have the necessary skill set or expertise. There are a number of companies in the marketing business calling themselves as "marketing agencies". But even these agencies charge very high rates for their services that most of the small businesses cannot afford or do not have the budget for. So they look for and prefer freelance marketing persons as they would fit into their budget. As far as the freelancer is concerned, he could work for multiple companies at the same time when he does marketing as a freelancer which is otherwise not possible as full time or on-site contract employee. He has the freedom to choose and decide whom to work for, what to do, when to do, how to do et al. Small businesses / companies are a better choice for a freelancer than big companies as most of the dealings would be directly with the decision makers. Some small companies even pay the marketing freelancer a share of their profit which is usually decided at the time of hiring. Which means better work better pay and vice versa. This kind of agreement between the company and the freelancer makes it profitable for both.
